Financial Controller

Position Overview

We are seeking a commercial Financial Controller to own our end-to-end financial operations. This role blends rigorous statutory accounting with complex global e-commerce, physical supply chain logistics, multi-currency treasury management, and tight project budget control.

Key responsibilities:

Oversee Core Financial Operations

  • Support & oversee the finance team to ensure accurate transactional input for month-end and year-end close 
  • Oversee AP cycle and approval of payment runs
  • Manage treasury balances across multiple currencies (GBP, USD, EUR) 
  • Produce accurate monthly management accounts including variance analysis
  • Prepare monthly board-ready financial packs
  • Deliver timely and accurate royalty reporting to our partners
  • Manage monthly UK payroll and pension contributions 
  • Monthly cashflow review and reporting
  • Prepare annual year-end pack
  • Prepare documentation to claim Video Games Expenditure Credit (VGEC) including requirement for BFI certification

Game Project Costing: 

  • Track & monitor budgets across active development pipelines for individual game titles
  • Partner with internal production & marketing teams to ensure external studio payments align with approved contract delivery schedules
  • Provide monthly financial reviews comparing actual project spend against baselines to flag overruns early

E-Commerce Accounting

  • Reconcile high-volume sales data from our direct-to-consumer (D2C) web platforms (Shopify) and payment gateways (Stripe, PayPal)
  • Own global tax compliance, including UK VAT, cross border taxes for EU & US sales 
  • Manage and verify digital payouts and royalty statements from platform holders (Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo)

Physical Supply Chain & Inventory Finance

  • Calculate accurate Cost of Goods Sold (COGS) by factoring in raw materials, manufacturing expenses, and global freight fees
  • Review and audit monthly storage, pick-and-pack, and shipping invoices from third-party logistics (3PL) partners worldwide
  • Oversee cyclical stock takes, manage inventory valuations, and establish provisions for slow-moving or obsolete physical stock

Qualifications & Key requirements:

  • Accreditation - fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) with proven minimum 5 years post-qualification experience (PQE) 

  • Industry Background - essential experience within an online retail & global distribution business & can demonstrate awareness of stock, multi-currency and international tax treatment

  • Commercial Acumen -  ability to partner closely with creative directors and studio heads to translate creative ambitions into realistic financial plans
  • Systems Expertise - advanced proficiency in Xero or equivalent, combined with MS Excel and Google Workspace skills. 

Plus an advantage but not essential competencies would be:

  • Video Games - industry background and/or interest in gaming
